R.A. Dickey might play for New York Mets in 2013 season without contract extension - MLB Update
Trading R.A. Dickey and awarding him a contract extension are not the only two options available to New York Mets.
There is another way they can deal with him. They can postpone extension and let him play with the club next year as a part of the option that the Mets have exercised on him at $5 million.
In this way, they can check how well he carries his top-notch form into the next season. They can also see the impact of his age on the effectiveness of the knuckleballs that he throws.
One of the major concerns of the Mets’ officials while undergoing negotiations for a contract extension with Dickey is his age.
At 38, they doubt Dickey can continue having success in the upcoming years. They are not ready to take his excellent expedition in 2012 season as a rule, considering the fact that he struggled by-and-large throughout his career.
Dickey, on the other hand, is boosted by his remarkable Cy Young Award winning campaign in 2012. Understandably, he is looking for an expensive deal.
The talk between both parties has been going on for weeks. Outcome of them has yet to come.
Mixed signals are emanating from the baseball Winter Meetings regarding Dickey. Earlier the sources reported Dickey is on the verge of being traded to one of the many organisations interested in him.
Right now the story is assuming another direction.
Words of the Mets’ chief operating officer, Jeff Wilpon suggest that the team is looking into delaying his contract renewal and not sending him to some other club.
"We're in the process now," Wilpon said. "It's a negotiation. They want more than we're willing to give right now. We want to do it for less than they want to accept right now. Somewhere in between, there's probably a deal to be done. If not, he'll be a
great bargain at $5 million playing out next season for us."
Wilpon believes that getting Dickey play at $5 million for 2013 Major League season is an extremely inexpensive option. Fans will also be happy with this.
Unfortunately, for Dickey this will not be an ideal reality.
