R.A. Dickey returns home empty handed after visiting winter meetings twice – MLB Update
The issue of contract extension of R.A. Dickey remains pending even as he regularly visits winter meetings of the New York Mets. In the last couple of days, he participated in the meetings two times but he failed to earn the desired deal.
The Cy Young Award winner from the National League is looking to sign an expensive deal with the Mets.
After his remarkable 2012 season campaign, he feels that he deserves being retained by the New York for at-least two years and at a substantial salary.
On the other hand, the financially struggling Mets find it unaffordable to offer him what he wants.
At 38, the Mets are apprehensive because of the possibility of his decline down the line.
The one good year by him provides no guarantee that he repeats the excellent performance in the upcoming seasons. Plus, the fact he has been highly inconsistent in the past can increase doubts of the club about his ability to sustain and stand out every
year.
His trade is on the cards. If the negotiations have not resulted into his signing an agreement up until now, it is hard to believe anything comes off in the future in this regard.
Only thing that appears to be viable right now is the trade of Dickey by the Mets. By acquiring an outfielder and a catcher in return for Dickey, they can address their weak areas on the roster.
This can also help them improve their offence, which was one of the primary reasons why they failed in the last season.
Sandy Alderson, General Manager for New York, is patience about handling the issue of Dickey as he comments that they will consider all possible factors before reaching any conclusion.
“With the passage of time comes more information, and a better ability to assess where we are,” Alderson said. “But it doesn’t mean that we’ll have a resolution by the time we leave here tomorrow afternoon. But I think when we leave here, we’ll be comfortable
that we’ve explored all of our options.”
Alderson is reviewing all the options available on the table including the trade of Dickey. It has led the fans to wonder what really the team is going to do with Dickey.
