R.A. Dickey signs a two year deal with New York Mets
The New York Mets have secured the services of ball player veteran, R. A. Dickey, on a two year deal.
The agreement that is valued around $7.8 million is considered a steal by many baseball experts in the country. Dickey has been an incredible player for the Mets, last season and it would only be viable to compare him to similar pitchers.
The Mets have a vesting option to retain the veteran’s pitching services through to 2013. The rising star would avail $5 million if that deal does come to fruition.
For now it’s important to know what Dickey can offer to the team. His Earning Runs Average was very low, last year. That makes him an important ball star by many regards.
The player was in the top-ten list for stars possessing that record last year. That is also why analysts around the country see this as a particularly steal deal.
Nevertheless, Dickey made the contract work for his own personal reason.
"My goal at this point is to be the best bargain in baseball for the next three years", Dickey said on a conference call Monday afternoon. "To win championships, you really have to have an altruistic approach in that I wasn't out to break the bank from the
get-go. If I want to be part of the solution here - and I do - giving some things up might help the collective good. I was willing to do that for this organization, and still am".
The 36 year-old pitcher would always pose a certain level of risk to the Mets, given his wear and tear probability. On the other hand, if his last season efforts are to play a major role, then the contract would not pay the player fairly across the board.
Whatever the case may be, the Mets will see the player as a bargain.
"The knuckleball is a unique talent", General Manager, Sandy Alderson, said, "and something that can play very well later in a pitcher's career".
Dickey’s last year stats were as follows, 2.84 Earning Runs Average - 11 wins and 9 defeats - 26 game starts -104 strikeouts.
The figures look impressive by all measures. With about 174 innings played over the season, this makes the Mets a lucky club when it comes to signing a cheap deal with Dickey. The only question now is, can the veteran pitcher perform?
