R.A Dickey to ink contract extension with Toronto Blue Jays before being traded-MLB Update
A time period has been given to R.A Dickey and Toronto Blue Jays within which they can agree on terms and conditions of the new contract.
In case the talks fail and contract extension is not granted by Toronto before the stated timeframe, the Mets will have to look for some other organisation to trade Dickey.
The whole scenario has put Dickey in an almost ideal situation. He can ask for the desired deal from the Blue Jays, for example he can demand the same amount of money that he requested from the Mets.
The reason why the Mets did not agree to a contract extension of Dickey is because he was insisting for a $31 million three-year deal.
For a financially struggling organisation like the Mets, it was unaffordable to be allocating such a huge amount of money for him.
Besides, considering the fact Dickey is 38-year-old, they were concerned that he may not be as successful as he was in 2012 during the upcoming seasons.
As per the reports, the Mets have finalised the prospects with Toronto that will be sent to their organisation in exchange for Dickey.
Only hindrance to the completion of the trade at the moment is whether Dickey is ready to play for Toronto or he wants to be shipped elsewhere.
The other day, Dickey expressed his grievances and questioned the way the Mets were dealing the issue of his contract extension.
He was unhappy with the undue delay by the officials for reaching a concrete conclusion.
Against this backdrop, Dickey will more probably leave the Mets and join the new club.
This, along with the fact Toronto needs a quality starting pitcher for their rotation, adds to the possibility that Dickey will play for the Blue Jays during 2013.
As Dickey is on the brink of parting ways with the Mets, fans will be disheartened.
They will be heartbroken, because he was their sole source of pride in the last season. Dickey single-handedly won games for the team and brought cheers on the faces of the fans on a number of occasions during 2012.
It will be interesting to see how they react after Dickey officially joins the Blue Jays.
