R.A Dickey to possibly play for New York Mets but without contract extension-MLB Update
With offseason wrapping up fast, the fate of R.A Dickey has yet not been decided by the New York Mets. He is still awaiting decision from the management regarding his contract extension.
The latest development that has taken place is he can play for the Mets next year but without having a contract extension in his hands.
That will be an undesirable scenario for Dickey, because earning the deal during the offseason is his foremost priority.
As he clarified earlier, he is not going to negotiate with the Mets during the next season if they do not renew his agreement in the offseason.
More probably, he will part ways with them and join some other organisation after playing 2013 Major League season with them.
Dickey had a remarkable 2012 season campaign. Winning the CY Young Award, he was considered the sole source of pride for the fans during the lacklustre expedition of the Mets.
Unfortunately, despite his proven excellence as a starter, the Mets do not find him a hurler worth granting $10-12 million per year salary.
They are fearful of his decline down the line, mainly because of his age. At 38, they are of the belief that it is highly unlikely he will maintain his current form during the upcoming seasons.
Considering the high-trade value of Dickey, they equally find the option of sending him to some other organisation in exchange for prospects from the recipient attractive.
What is worrisome for Dickey is that they are taking so much amount of time for coming up with something concrete about him.
Talks are on-going since almost the beginning of the offseason. Now, even the Baseball Winter Meetings have passed and yet no decision has come off from the management of the club.
Earlier reports emerge stating that a number of clubs are interested in Dickey. The Mets were equally excited to entertain those intentions shown by various teams to acquire Dickey through a trade.
Since then, somehow those trade talks have subsided. It can be concluded those interested teams could not meet the demand of being awarded quality outfielders to the Mets in exchange for Dickey.
Just like the Mets, all other organisations may have their concerns regarding the acquisition of Dickey.
They will not have ignored various important factors which the Mets are also aware of while calculating the real worth of Dickey. All this, most probably, has become the reason why Dickey has not been traded so far.
Dickey will be extremely disappointed by all what is happening around him. He was a standout pitcher in the National League during the 2012 season and yet he is struggling to find some organisation settling on a deal involving him.
Dickey will be looking to accept the challenge of proving his worth once again and render the evaluations by experts of his pitching strength wrong.
