R.A. Dickey will not start All-Star Game, as Tony La Russa announces Matt Cain as starter - MLB

Finally, speculations about who is going to start the All-Star Game come to an end. The National League ASG manager, Tony La Russa declares Matt Cain as a starting pitcher, putting an end to hopes R.A. Dickey, the New York Mets’ starter, was entertaining
before the announcement.
The decision is not surprising in light of the fact that historically knuckleballers are not selected for starting such high-profile games.
It is for the same reason, Dickey, who has been terrific on the mound throughout the season, has been put aside in favour of Cain, despite the fact his numbers are way better than the latter.
Meanwhile, Dickey will be unhappy. He was confident to be announced as a starter, earlier. Even when issue of an inability of the catchers to read his knuckler was discussed, he was optimistic, maintaining that they will not have problem handling his throws.
In-fact, he went on to suggest the authorities that if he can be used as a starter, it will be a logical decision, believing that it will allow the catcher to have more time adapting to his throws and make better plays, as a result.
On this, knowing that questions will be raised on why Dickey has not been selected, Russa explained his decision and tried to cool down the Mets fans. He elaborated that the decision does not negate achievements Dickey had in the season and Cain was chosen
because of his splendid career.
"I don't think it detracts at all from R.A.'s accomplishments and being here," La Russa said. "Whenever he pitches, it's going to be a great event for him and for baseball and for ourselves. I just looked at it, [pitching coach Dave Duncan] and I did have
some conversations, and we wanted to reward Matt Cain for a career of excellence that's getting better and better. ... It was a tough call."
Regardless of the announcement, Dickey is still the best pitcher in the National League.
Getting his name on the ASG roster while his career is coming to an end is an incredible achievement for him. Therefore, he can rest assured about his ability to throw quality innings and can keep repeating his performance in the next half of the season.
