R. A. Dickey’s surgery completed as he looks to earn contract extension from New York Mets - MLB
New York Mets’ starting pitcher R. A. Dickey has gone through surgery to repair an abdominal muscle tear.
He will be waiting for the announcement of his contract extension by the Mets.
The main question is about how his surgery will have its bearing on the modalities of the new contract. The Mets may have apprehensions regarding the strength of Dickey’s arm following the surgery. They may be unwilling to grant him the amount of money that
Dickey is actually hoping for.
Dickey was a success story this year for the Mets. He was one of the few bright spots for a team which struggled by-and-large in the season.
The Mets went through one of their worst regular seasons. Especially in the latter half of the season, their performance declined immensely as they piled up losses.
Regardless of an overall win-loss record of the team, Dickey kept his dominance on the mound afloat with an immaculate use of his knuckle-ball. He continued winning matches whenever he was given opportunities.
Based on his excellent shows in the season, it can be concluded that he will be awarded a contract renewal.
As the amount of money of his existing contract does not reflect the kind of pitcher he has become for the team, the club will seriously consider changes in this regard.
Unfortunately his surgery can become one of the reasons why he is not granted an extravagant contract extension.
When Mets’ General Manager Sandy Alderson was questioned regarding Dickey and David Wright, both of them are potential free agents, he expressed his desire to retain these two players. For him, clinching deals with them in the days ahead is one of their
most important tasks in the off-season.
"Those are the two big issues," Sandy Alderson said. "Retaining our own players is one of the key tenets of the approach we're trying to take."
As the surgery has been carried out now, Dickey will be making himself ready for Spring Training.
He will be looking to start preparations for the next season from where he left in the recently concluded one.
It will be interesting to see what type of deal the Mets begin negotiations and ink a deal.
