Question:

R.I.P. Rock Music: 1954-2004?

Basically I think once hair metal became popular rock was on its death bed. Grunge was the defibrillator and it revived rock by bringing Alternative to the masses... but thanks to the likes NSYNC and BackStreet Boys it died again. It seems rock was somewhat rececitated with the little garage rock boom that lasted form 2002 to 2003... but yet again it died and it appears right now it wont be coming back. Yes I know there are some great underground bands... but nobody is listening to them.

Anybody else agree with me?

  1. Music of all kinds is ever evolving. Now you can rest assured there will be a revival of actual talent compared to the talentless acts you may hear on a daily basis.

  2. I don't think a Genre of music can die, it can become less popular in the mainstream world of music, but not die.

  3. Thrash Metal is having a big revival and there's still bands coming to the forefront that I enjoy.

Rock/Metal music is far from dead!

  4. No.

Just because you don't like what's being released, dosen't make it not rock music.

I still hear good rock music.

  5. You need to find a new radio station. Try college radio- it's about two years ahead of mainstream commercial radio. And don't worry- as long as there is teenage angst there will be great bands trying to express it. The only problem is that one day you'll wake up and realize that you've gotten older and the music isn't aimed at you anymore. Not that you can't still enjoy it, just that it's no longer "your music".

  6. It died much earlier that you think, imo.

  7. I'd say more like... 1954-1999. If that. In my opinion, there hasn't been very much good music since the "millennium." But most people tell me that I have odd tastes because I'm only 25 years old, but my most favorite music is all the metal, rock, glam, and hair bands from the 80's. I listen to a mix of nearly everything, but the 80's stuff makes up the majority of my collection.

Personally, I never really liked grunge, but you are right that it breathed life into the industry and it opened the door for so many other styles as well.

Music, much like everything else in our world, seems to go through phases... Fads, if you will. Things from the past always make come backs. I remember when I was in high school, swing suddenly became popular again. I'm sure grunge will come back around eventually. Right now it seems with the creation of Guitar Hero and Rock Band, that the phase is heavy metal and the type of rock that I like. Yay for me. =D

On the other hand, I can't help but wonder what will be the next phase. What is the "new" sound that will take the world by storm next? It's really a very interesting thing to dream about.

  8. Rock is still alive. It's just not spoon-fed to the masses on mainstream radio like pop and rap/hip-hop. You need to know where to find it.

    Try some of these bands:

    The Hold Steady

    The Killers

    Muse

    Arcade Fire

    Interpol

  9. white stripes r still going strong

  10. Weezer. They still make great stuff after almost 20 years of music making.

    Foo Fighters

    The Hives

    The Vines

    The White Stripes

That's all I can think of at the moment.

  11. You sound like you think the only 'real' rock is/was 'grunge'.  Grunge did not exist in 1954.  Also, 'grunge' was hardly a 'revolution'...lol  As for hair-metal, those bands actually took rock and roll back to the basics that began around 1954, which declared the return of rock and the end of 'new wave/synth'.  Grunge, Alternative (and even techno) have the energy and attitude required but none of the melody (with the exception of certain alternative, of course).  Grunge and all these supposed-genres that seem to be missing a lead guitarist; are also lacking that which made rock and roll popular to begin with.  HOWEVER, those same bands DO have the ENERGY and ATTITUDE and thus; THEY ROCK!  LOL!  To sum it up...   Rock Lives On!  ;P

  12. No sir you are WRONG!  There are still a lot of great rock bands out there...especially metal!!  And you are also wrong about underground bands...there are a ton of great ones that have plenty of support.  Rock music that is on the radio today though is pretty crappy for the most part, you have to actually go out and find good bands now-a-days.

  13. It is in a dry spell like has many times beforejust hang in there the next big  actis out there waiting to take us by surprize and take us on a journey we will  never forget.Long live rock and roll-Chuck Berry

  14. There are a lot of good rock bands out now, most have a big fan base, but you'll never hear their music being played on MTV,Vh1, or maybe your local radio station(depending on where you live). The garage rock craze(whatever you want to call it) is still going on and lots of indie bands are starting to get recognition...

Rock music is far from dead : )

  15. There are great underground bands and if people didn't listen to them then why would they be making music?

    Rock is still alive.

  16. yeah i'd also like to add to that, rest in pieces KROQ.

  17. man i know if you ask someone who john lennon is they will probably say"who"

and people keep saying bands like AC/DC and Aerosmith are to old

WELL THEY ARE NOT !!!!!!!!!! THEY WILL ALWAYS ROCK MORE @SS THAN ANYONE !!!!!!!!!!!

NOW IM GOING TO LOCK MYSELF IN THE CLOSET AND CRY CAUSE $HITTY POP/BOY BANDS AND RAP AND DISNEY KILLED IT !!!!!!!!! .........

THE ROCK GOD ARE CRYING :(  CANT YOU HEAR THEM

THEY HAVE OFFICIALLY CLOSED THE STAIRWAY TO ROCK HEAVEN

WE WONT GET ANY SATISFACTION OR HAVE WHOLE LOTTA LOVE AND ROCK N ROLL WILL BECOME NOISE POLLUTION AND PURPLE HAZE WILL BE IN OUR EYES AND THE GREAT GIG IN THE SKY WILL FALL TO THE GROUND AND WE WONT BE ABLE TO ROCK N ROLL ALL NITE AND WE WONT BE ALBE TO RUN WITH THE DEVIL AND EVERYTHING WILL FADE TO BLACK !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!...
