R.M.V Gurusai Datt tames Keigo Sonoda in Men’s Singles first round - 2011 Canada Open Grand Prix
India’s young and talented shuttler, R.M.V Gurusai Datt powered his way into the Men’s Singles second round as he tamed Japan’s Keigo Sonoda in the first round of the 2011 Canada Open Grand Prix, in Richmond DC, Canada, on Wednesday, July 20.
Datt opened his campaign in remarkable fashion, as he remained in superb control and moved easily against the experienced Sonoda, who was struggling against the spirited Indian. Datt gave a severe treatment to his opponent and spent only 30 minutes in the
court to win the encounter in straight games.
Sonoda started the game in a positive manner, but lost his control as soon as the Indian geared up his speed and started to play to his full potential. It was a wonderful match as Datt was dominating in the court, proving that he has become skilled enough
to crush the Japanese with surprising ease.
In the opening half, the Indian made a clear gap of 11-7 by playing positive badminton. The Japanese was making many mistakes in the initial points of the match, which helped the Indian to build a good lead. After the break, Datt progressed with the same
speed and finished-off the set with an impressive score of 21-13, in 17 minutes.
In the second game, the Japanese failed to return the smashes of the Indian, who was hitting the bird very hard from everywhere in his court. Sonoda found himself completely helpless against his challenger, as he failed to find any loop hole in his rival’s
court and was trailing by 11-4 in the first-half.
After the interval, Datt became more fast to maintain his superb lead against the shaky Japanese, who almost gave up in this final half of the second game. Datt continued his smooth run in the concluding phase and captured the second game with a dramatic
result of 21-8, in just 13 minutes. This stunning straight-set battle finished-off in 30 minutes with a 21-13 and 21-8 score on the board.
