That you thought was very cool and catchy, until you found out just what band was singing it? it hasn't happened to me, but I have a friend who despises blues, but loved the song Cocaine. He went into a rant when he found out it was Clapton.

Ever had a similar experience?

  1. Its not the same situation but, in school on the tv screen for morning announcements, we had an act and the song used was under pressure by queen and david bowie. Everyone in the class said what is this stupid song, etc. and were laughing. I was laughing along with them because i had to act natural, you know, even though i liked the song b/c its catchy..

  2. it's never happened to me but one time i had this friend who loved the song "Detroit Rock City" by Kiss. i had asked him what other songs he liked by Kiss and he started yelling "oh my god!? that's by Kiss!? i've been listening to the devil's music all this time!!"

i just backed away slowly. haven't seen him in years...

  3. A good song is a good song regardless the artist or genre.

A similar experience involved a friend of mine who was reeling on "Don't Dream It's Over" by Crowded House.

He despised Neil Finn and one of his previous bands Split Enz. He blew a gasket when he discovered "Don't Dream It's Over" was a Neil Finn tune.

    BTW, I love the blues.

  4. That hasn't happened to me to the best of my knowledge.  I can usually recognize all the crappy artists out there almost as well as the good ones.  There might have been a few instances where I liked a song from an artist I didn't care for but I'm sure I knew who it was right away.

  5. Nope, never happened to me

  6. Oh Man, how can anyone hate Blues? That's just wrong.

  7. It hadn't happened to me but it does remind me of something similar.

Back in 1988 Donny Osmond had a hit with the single "Soldier of Love."  Fearing that the record buying public were not going to buy a new Donny Osmond record, Donny and his label decided to release the single with no indication of who the artist was, and radio stations told the public that it was by a "mystery artist". After the song gained in popularity, it was finally announced that the track was by Donny Osmond, and the song reintroduced him to a new generation of record buyers.

  8. @ Darth: Man i feel the same way.  If you like any type of Rock/metal whatever, all of that came from blues!!!

  9. I learned a lot about myself in this respect (and am proud to say that I passed the test) when I first heard Rock Your Body by Justin Timberlake. I hadn't really liked anything like it since, probably Michael Jackson and it just clicked. I was shocked when I found out who it was and I was very shamed as I walked the cd up to the counter when I bought it. It was a big lesson to me though. Who cares? Good tunes are good tunes. I think everyone can benefit from liking something they thought they would hate enough to drop $15 bucks on the counter and have the check out kid look at you funny and all of that. It's incredibly liberating.

Enjoying that song was a big step for me in the sense that my mom used to laugh and call me a fascist because I was pretty harsh in my judgement of music and I had to kind of eat my prejudices on that one. It's made me a lot more open minded.
