or am i alone?

~~theres a MQ at the end. you dont have to read the whole story

well... the story goes.

yesterday i was talking about the beatles to this guy... because he was wearing a shirt of them, and we started talking about songs.

and so i was quoting "i am the walrus" and about 234234 of the people that were around me burst into laughter... they've NEVER heard the song.

when i thought that couldnt fail any worse,

today i wore my shirt that has robert plant & jimmy page on it.

& i was talking to my friend about HIS shirt (it had spiderpig on it... kinda lame)

and this girl that hangs around me & my friends (no one really likes her.. she's just there) asked who led zeppelin was.

i burst out into a fake seizure and EVERYONE there was yelling at the girl to go away.. one of my friends started FLIPPING out on her...

so about five minutes later... my friends carl & ray arrived (this was at lunchtime) and i was like, Ray, you know who led zeppelin is, right?

~i swear to god he said back "no, who's he?"

everyone went nuts again, and my other friend taylor was like, dude you've GOTTA have heard of stairway to heaven. and he was like "oh yeah, i like that song"

i got so mad.

so i was like, i bet you like dragonforce, huh?

he was like, yeah, they're cool, they have a chinese guitar player, and through the fire & flames took me 8 tries to beat on hard!

AND. i had my nirvana book out on the bus today, and this guy wanted to see it, so he was like, who's this guy?

and everyone that was around was like, how could you NOT know who kurt cobain is?!?!

and they said, dont you know nirvana?

he was like.... oh yeah....

and i asked him to name a song and he was all

"heart something...." and i was like "heart shaped box" and he was like "oh yeah."

these past two days were full of FACEPALMS & FAIL.

anything similar happen to you guys???

finally~~~~

MQ- songs that EVERYONE knows?

like the lyrics, everyone knows "celebrate good times... COME ON!"

  1. My best friend never even heard of Cream, The Rolling Stones, Thin Lizzy, Deep Purple, Judas Priest, Iron Maiden, Kansas, Kiss, or Anthrax until I told him about them. Can you believe that?! It seems many people around my age (15) don't know about the older, popular bands; they just listen to the stuff that has come out since they were born which is a shame because that means the older music is slowly starting to die out. Also, there are a lot of people who have never heard of these bands and listens to bad, modern music from today(I am not saying all of the new music is bad, just most of it). By the way, I think Dragonforce is a good band but you're right about Fall Out Boy because it sucks. I would also slap anyone who said the Jonas Brothers are his or her favorite band. A song that everyone seems to know is Smoke on the Water, but if I asked them who did the song, they probably wouldn't know. Another one is Iron Man.

  2. Heh.Your description isn't very far from what young people(20-22 years old)are like in the university here(I live in Crete).Only the die-hard rockers will have heard of Led Zeppelin, whose music is considered quite underground-ish since radio stations here are lame(no rock) and hardly any people have cable and/or music channels.

h**l,even The freaking Beatles here have a 'cult' following.

MA:Britney Spears has helped popularize "(I can't get no) satisfaction" so I guess this is a song pretty much everybody knows.

  3. Almost everyone at my school listens to rap/hip-hop. So everybody. And the ones who like rock listens to bands like Tokio Hotel and Metro Station. Oh and MCR.

  4. Well I don't bother in talking to my friends about music because we listen to completely different things but anyway, I was taking History of Rock 'n' Roll so I could get some extra credits in my high school and we were watching this video about the british invasion and my friend turned to me and said  "hey I think I'm going to write about the beatles for our paper, are they brothers?"    hahaha

  5. This was posted a while ago but i'll answer anyway =]

i was surprised at how many people in my high school ARENT musically challenged cuz sooooo many people in middle school were lol but last year i was wearing my favorite necklace (a jimi hendrix dogtag). the design is kinda hard to see but once you get a good look at it, its obvious who it is. so my friend was sitting next to me and asked "is that John Lennon?"

    asjkfhkfjshlfkjadsh!!!!!!

    yea...

and the i'm pretty sure the only reason she knows who John Lennon is is becuase i talk about him constantly.

  6. Everyone at my school except for me and a couple other select few people have any musical education at all. A couple weeks (nah... a couple months) ago I was with my friend who told me that she knew a lot about the bands and artists I listen to. We were looking at a picture of Led Zeppelin [but it didn't say 'Led Zeppelin' on it, it was just a picture of the members] and she asked me, "Who are they?"

"Well, from left to right, that's John Bonham, Robert Plant, Jimmy Page and John Paul Jones."

"Oh, I've never heard of any of them. And what band are they from?"

    "...Led Zeppelin..."

"OMG NO WAY!!! All this time, I thought Led Zeppelin was one guy!!!"

And then the other day I got a poster of Jim Morrison, and she was looking at it, and she asked me, "Who's that?"

"It's Jim Morrison. I thought you would recognise him by now..."

"At first I thought he was the guy from the Peter Pan movie, and then I was like, no, she would want a poster of him, and then I was like, oh I get it, it's Robert Plant!" That was an extreme, epic failure.

OMG, ROTFLMAO! Once I asked my mom who the drummer for the Who was, she replied, "It's Eric Clapton, duh!" And once she was going through my CD's, and she was like, "Kitty, who is this band, Sgt. Pepper?"

I could think of many more times where this happened, but I think I'll stop there... they all decrease in patheticess/epic failureness after that.

Oh, and I've gotten multiple "What the h**l is Led Zeppelin?" while walking around stores with my Led Zeppelin shirt on.

    Oh ya...

MQ: Stairway to Heaven, Imagine, Let it Be... the list goes on.

Edit--JUST REMEMBERED (sorry I keep telling you stories)!!! The other day I was listening to my friend who supposedly knows a lot about rock (she just says it to boost her ego) and Freebird came on. I said, "Oh, it's Freebird."

She said, "Oh, yeah, I kind of like that guy Freebird, but I don't really listen to his songs much."

    I said, "Freebird isn't a guy, it's a song."

She got all pissy and started making accusations. She was like, "OMG, even YOU can't know everything."

I said, "I'm not the one who claimed I did."

Edit #2--LOL! My mom hates Led Zeppelin with a burning passion but she pressures me into buying shirts with Led Zeppelin on it because she says they look good on me. O.o

LOL Beatlesho. I hate it when people wear band t-shirts when they hardly even know anything about the band.

Edit #one billion--I was talking to someone about Santana a long time ago, about how I liked his music, and they were like, "Oh yeah, isn't that guy a football player or something?"

SORRY, I just keep remembering these stories...

Edit #two billion--I meant to say I was listening to the radio with my friend, not listening to my friend.

  7. hah, my school is pretty ghetto, so most of the people there listen to rap and hip-hop.

Almost all of my friends, unfortunately, listen to poser bands and top 40.

Some of them don't even know who RHCP is, even though they're a mainstream band. And of course they don't know who Led Zeppelin or even Nirvana and Kurt Cobain are.

One of my best friends called the Jonas Brothers (and she's a fan of their music, BTW) a 'punk' band. It really made me sad. I told her to go listen to The Ramones and The Clash.

  8. I remember being asked all kinds of stupid questions at my old school (I've only been in my new one for a week, so they haven't had the chance yet). Things like "Who're the guys on your shirt?" (pointing at a Beatles t-shirt!), or "Who're these guys? they're ugly!" (pointing at a Queen shirt).

I also know one girl, who knows a whole lot about all these cool bands like Led Zep and Queen... But listens to Mcfly. It's her choice, I suppose '^_^.

MQ: We Are the Champions- Queen.

Edit: Whoa, Nirvana Snob... You nearly made me cry with your punchline D=

I remembered another thing: At my old school, I had ONE friend who was musically educated (in our terms ^^). One time I was talking to him about Led Zeppelin, while another friend of mine listened to us. After a while she came up to us and asked "Wait, Led Zeppelin is a BAND?" *facepalm*

  9. Hey ICSFMSLUT...

    Oh my friggen God....

When people do that it gets on my nerves!

Like the other day... this girl was wearing a shirt that said " Sushi in the Sky with Diamonds"   (Odd...I know...)

And so I went up to her and I was like "Awesome shirt! So you like the Beatles too?" And her response was " Uhhhh.....who?" I gave her this awkward expression, then I started staring her down. Then she started skipping away...

And my binder is filled with pictures of a ton of musicians I like, and people ask me *daily* "Who's he?" and they'll point to a picture of Syd Barrett, or George Harrison, or Jimmy Page....

I mean how do these people go through life *not* knowing them?!?

    Oh AND:

My friend a day or two ago was wearing a Dark Side of the Moon shirt, so I'm like "Whoa amazing shirt! I love Dark side of the moon! What's your favorite song off the album?"

Then there was a looong silence, and then she said:

    "Ummmmm.................Another Brick in the Wall....?"

    OH MY GOD

  10. There's tons of idiots at my school that are like that (even some teachers). But  I guess idiots are just one of those natural things you can't stop from encountering in life, like a thunderstorm or a shark.

MQ: Blitzkrieg Bop - The Ramones (a few of the musically challenged people I know like this song, they don't know who sings it though)

  11. I was wearing an AC/DC shirt.

My friend said: Who the f*ck is AC/DC?

    I bitchslapped him, of course.

MA: Highway to h**l. Right? COME ON!

  12. Yeah i've experienced it lmao. When i'm bored in lessons, and we're not doing any work, i'll doodle the names of bands i like in the back of my exercise book.

I was writing 'Nirvana' in bubble writing, and my friend sitting next to me said, 'who's that? I've never heard of them'.

I couldn't believe she had no idea who Kurt Cobain was! I told her about him, and Nirvana, so she just said, 'oh right'. But i was shocked. I thought practically everyone knew who he was....

  13. your's sounds worst

so i meet this girl and i asked her what her fav band was ( bc we had to introduce other people to he class,) and she sayd jonas borthers, ( i squinted a bit, ), and then she sayd, BUT DONT SAY THAT  ot the class, she sayd i "also like the beatles", , and then i was like **in my head* oh thats better ,( but at the same time thought she might be liying ) ( there's alot of other people who like the jonas brother but they arent public about it and when someone does talk about them people usually * say they suck* or * do Meehrrh  sounds* , so i am glad for that..

but i love my french teacher, he likes music alot, so we usuallly talk is about music  :)

    but sucks for you thought....

thumbs down.. Why?? bc i talked about jb  well thats the only situation i have, and she wanted for us to talk abotu similar ones  So **** off :)

  14. I'm not in High School, now - But I sincerely Empathize with your Frustration...

    Fashion takes Precedence over Reality.

I see a lot of Kids wearing "Che Guevara" shirts to be Cool - yet, I ask them about Socialism & Communism - and they have no Point of Reference.

    ....and to "MAC" -- What's a "Looser" ??

....and you really should not Project about your Genitalia to people - It's Self-Deprecating.

    .

  15. welcome to the world of mainstream music loving idiots

mq: happy birthday, twinkle twinkle little star

those are the only guarantees anymore

  16. I read the story.  Was fairly intriguing enough!

Yes, I understand.  I am back at school also, (have been for two weeks) and there are majorly sh*tted people these days.  I don't even MEET anyone with a vague interest in GOOD music, let alone know the first word of any famous kickass songs.

    Yes, epic phail, definitely.

MQ: everyone knows "All You Need Is Love" from The Beatles and about half the Abbey Road album.  "Time Of The Season" from The Zombies is a song that everyone knows or at least has heard of before.  Hmm, oh people always know "Hotel California" (The Eagles obviously) and "No Woman No Cry" (Bob Marley).

    Edit.

There should be a musically challenged class in school that people should be placed in.

  17. roflcopter

During a recent science class, we were going up to a table to get something, and some girls used the phrase "Oh my Jonas." Several things happened. First, a friend of mine declared them to be obsessed, and they denied it. I instantly burst into an utter lulzgasm that lasted for about 10 minutes.

    MQ: None

  18. Yeah, they're everywhere. It's a disease.

Friend: Hey, you like Rock, right?

    Me: Yeah.. Why?

Friend: Have you heard of The Jonas Brothers?? They're great.

    *hedZy bursts out laughing*

    Friend: WHAT?!?!

MQ: I'm pretty sure everyone knows Imagine by John Lennon.

    I hope so...

  19. oh my god! so many stories!

the one that really sticks out is......

i was in line at some store (really long line) & there is this guy, we started to talk, he was wearing a led-zeppelin tee-shirt so i said "cool you like led-zeppelin. what's your favorite song?" the guy replies "who's led-zeppelin?" i looked at him like he just told me he was a girl! so i said ''how can you not know who they are your waring their t-shirt?" guy says ''it's my brothers'' i told him to stop wearing of band he don't know

mq: schools out ~ alice cooper

  20. YES YES YES

I wore a Bowie tee and a guy called Rick was like "Who's that transvestite?". I said, "Today's Tranny Pride Day." and they just laughed.

Our teacher had a very mod hairstyle and I said, "Jesus, not even Paul McCartney would like that hair!" and people were like "Paul McCartney?" I started crashing my head against the wall.

    D:

I also wore a Pink Floyd tee (The Dark Side of the Moon), and a girl (Mindy) asked "What's that? I've seen it somewhere... I think it was a Madonna poster or something..." I swear I wanted to jump off the window. D:

    So...

    No love, you're not alone.

  21. Yes, sadly that has happened before to me. My cousin knows like nothing about any music except christian stuff and Hannah Montana. She is constantly getting John Lennon and Paul McCartney confused. She's terrified of Green Day, and will not get it through her head that The Who are not in any way related with The Beatles. I guess she thought they were all in some huge family of something. It took her years to get over the way Kiss look. She falls for propaganda and media. It's sad.

    MQ: I'm a Believer - The Monkees

Dude, why did I get two thumbs down?! I didn't say anything "bad" I 'm just answering a question that someone asked. oh, Trolls *sighs* But to whoever gave me those thumbs up..... Thank you.

  22. Lets just say I'm alone on the whole thing and digging into underground artists of those eras makes it even worse. I don't even bother trying to communicate with people about music. It's just so sad. The most I see from people is Led Zeppelin shirts and they probably don't appreciate their albums as a whole anyway, soo.. :(

MQ: We Will Rock You/We Are The Champions by Queen

EDIT - I can see for miles - Yeah, of course :) Me too. I just can't talk about it to people. They'll be like "Stairway To Heaven is so good!" and I just try to be nice and say "Yeah, pretty good song.."

I give them some credit for liking them instead of Fall Out Boy, Panic at the disco,  etc.., but some of them still listen to the mainstream c**p pop/rock bands *shakes head in disgust*

  23. Yeah. Everything that you said pretty much said it. One of my friends said he liked Nirvana, but only liked "Smells like Teen Spirit."

  24. They all are challenged here.

  25. that was too much to read.

  26. I don't expect people to know anything about the bands I like.

    It does suck though.

Everyone in my school liked rap, hip hop, classic rock, ICP, 'emo', or whatever was hawt.

I had no one to rock talk with.

And even though I'm not in school anymore, it's still the same thing.

Some guy I work with asked me what my favorite band was, I replied Everclear. His response "Oh, the band with that old guy".

I wonder if he mistook Everclear for Everlast.

Very few people around me knows who The Smashing Pumpkins are either.

  27. I see musically challenged people all the time!

MA: Another Brick in the Wall Part 2

    We don't need no education...

  28. I wish I could star this question more than once!

You don't even know how many times I've been called emo because I like metal

There are two kinds of kids at my school who fail at music the most. The preps who listen to bad pop and fake gangsters who think there ghetto. I call them fake gangsters because know one is really ghetto if they grow up in the small town that I live in.

Oh No! Not the dreaded thumbs down :o

  29. Dude your jaw will drop when you hear this one: I was talking to a group of friends at lunch once. We started talking about music and of course all the FOBs, PATDs, Hannah Montana fans and Jo Bro fans came out. Then I kind of glared at everyone and went "You guys don't know what good music is. Nirvana is my favorite band."

So everyone kinda looked at me. Then someone ventured "What's Nirvana?"

And someone else "Isn't it that Buddhist thing?"

I KNOW! Here's the punchline: I live in Seattle, Washington. Yep. Feel my pain?

  30. a few dudes were like that when i went to school, but there again i was listening to Robert Johnson, Al Di Meola, Chet Atkins and Crosby Still and Nash.  Even the teachers didnt have a clue what i was on about and this was in music class

also i was classed as a outcast for it.  Well as i look back i can see why, i carried about 7 guitar theory books in my bag and read them at lunch time, GEEEK!

    MQ: Yesterday - The Beatles

  31. The people I'm surrounded by are either into gangsta rap or disney c**p and I listen to rock.  They say I'm emo or a satan worshiper.  I find it absolutely hilarious.

    MA "Don't Stop Believing" -Journey

          "We are the Champions"- Queen
