R&R crossing?

Question

If you stop at a R&R crossing because there are flashing red lights, but you look both ways and do not see or hear a train, what do you do? Do you cross or stay put?

This question assumes you have no barriers keeping you from crossing.

I wait until the gates are back up and the lights are off. Train or not, it is illegal in every state to cross a railroad track when the gates are down and/or the red lights are flashing. Also, just because no train is in sight, that doesn't mean that one is not approaching the crossing.

Note...red means STOP.

well I think the law states that you are not supposed to cross the road, but I do it all the time as long as I can get across safely of course.
