I'm having a hard time deciding between these two drivers. This is the first time I am purchasing a good driver and I would like to know the differences between the two. I know the 460 is bigger thus offering more forgiveness but my main question has to do with the movble weights. The 425 has four weights and the 460 only has two. I am planning on buying the extra weights and would like to know how much of a difference those two extra weights on the 425 will make.

  1. Can't really recommend one over the other as I have not played them.  The whole moveable weight thing seems like overkill to me.  My whole life I have tried to develope and maintain a consistent swing that will hold up under pressure so that I know where the ball is going.  I just don't see how changing weights is going to aid that process.  Maybe if you were a tour pro and could do just about anything with any shot and it was going to be a really windy day you could change the weight for a lower trajectory.  But for the average player I just don't see it as that important.  Oh and one reason Taylor drivers are so popular on tour is that about five years ago they offered twice the weekly paycheck to use their driver over what the going rate was for every other manufacturer.  Well since most guys on tour could break 80 hitting a coke bottle off the tee naturally they all took the extra dough and started hitting Taylor.

  2. I play the r7 425 with a 9.5 degree loft.  I was custom fitted for mine a year ago and I love it.  I gained a little distance from my Nike Sasquatch; and most of all, I hit it a lot straighter.  Your right about it having 4 moveable weight transfers and the 460 only having 2.  That's a big difference.  Have you considered the r7 Superquad?  It is a 460 with 4 mwt's like the 425.  It's pretty much the same except for the larger clubhead.  Go to a local club or shop and ask to demo all three: the 425, 460, and superquad.

The 4 moveable weights are awesome.  You can tinker with it before your round to set up what kind of drive you want to hit that day without having to change your swing.  But remember, you are not allowed to change the weight after you start your round in a competition or for handicap purposes.  That's against USGA rules.

Taylor Made is the #1 driver on all the major tours for a reason.
