  1. No they do NOT let you speed undetected!!! That's because radar detectors don't detect police cars, they detect police radar guns. So if a cop is driving behind you and doesn't have his radar on, and then gets right up behind you without you seeing and turns it on real quick and gets your speed, you get a nice ticket. Also if a cop is waiting behind a bush or something, he could have his radar detector off, you go flying by and you'll get pulled over in no time. Also depending on how far the cop is and/or how fast your going, you might not have time to actually slow down, or you might look really obvious slamming the brakes all of a sudden. Just don't speed, seriously, thats the easiest way to not get a ticket, and not get into an accident.

Most police use X, K and Ka bands. Recently there's newer ones (POP) that can turn on, get your speed and turn off again in basically a second, and radar detectors are pretty much worthless against that.

Cobra brands are cheap, they don't really do their job, a lot of false alarms. The only "good" one i would say is the Valentine One. But like i said, no radar detector is 100% fool proof. You are NOT guaranteed to be speeding undetected

  2. As an alternative to buying a cheap radar detector, I would seriously consider just never driving fast.

The cheaper the radar detector, the fewer features it has, the fewer radar bands it detects, the less likely it is to detect those bands, the more often you will receive false alerts, and the more visible it is to police radar detector detectors (RDD). If you use a cheap radar detector, you are likely to 1. not receive an alarm when you should, 2. receive false alarms when you shouldn't, and 3. receive a ticket and have the device confiscated. (See link in sources for more information.)

The best windshield-mounted radar detector in independent tests by Speed Measurement Labs and 1stRadarDetectors.com is the Beltronics STi Driver. The Bel STi Driver provides the best detection over the greatest distances with the least number of false alerts and 100% invisibility to police radar detector detectors. The Valentine One radar detector comes in a close second, with the following 3 radar detectors rounding out the top 5 radar detectors in the world: Escort Passport 9500i, Escort Passport 8500 X50, and Beltronics Pro RX65. See the source link for a comparison and links to all of these products.

If you are concerned about police laser (LIDAR), your only alternative is a laser jammer. Most radar detectors will detect police laser, but by then it's already too late. 0.2 seconds under the laser and your speed is recorded. A laser jammer detects and jams the laser gun, allowing you time to adjust your speed if necessary. Like radar detectors, laser jammers are also legal in nearly every state. There are a number of laser/radar combo systems, like the Escort Passport 9500ci, which includes the new Escort ZR4 laser jammer. Cobra does not make a radar detector that tests in the top 5 best radar detectors.

Don't buy any product that guarantees that you will not get any tickets, or that they will pay your ticket. What good is it if they pay for the ticket YOU WILL GET, if it costs you in time, court costs and points on your license?? It's a great gimmick for the company selling the junk, but it will s***w you right out of your money.

  3. The only thing I can guarantee is that with a radar detector you will get a bigger ticket.

You are better off learning the feeding habits of bears and always running with some bear bate then with a detector.

Better yet, just follow the posted speed limit!

I have yet to be stopped for speeding when I was not violating the speed limit (it is cheaper by at least 50$, no radar detector needed).
