  1. The population in India is booming and is quickly becoming unsustainable. Rain water harvesting is a good idea since the utility infrastructure is already overmatched by the sheer number of people.

  2. In urban areas of the developed world, at a household level, harvested rainwater can be used for flushing toilets watering plants & lawns, washing dishes, doing laundry, etc. In areas with hard water, rain water is superior to the main water supply water for these uses. Rain water can also be used for showering or bathing, but it may require treatment prior to use for drinking and cooking. There are many benefits to collecting rainwater in both urban and rural areas, especially now that everyone is so conscious of going "green" and conserving energy. In other countries and within other cultures, rain water harvesting may still be the main form of obtaining water for everyday uses such as in in third world countries. Remember that before there were water treatment plants, people HAD to collect rainwater for their everyday uses so it's a very old and ancient practice for many cultures, countries and societies.
