RAM Questions... DDR2 vs. DDR3?

Okay, I am planning on building a new computer. I have a decent knowledge of computer parts, compatibilty, terminolgy, etc.

Anyways, I am debating on buying a motherboard with DDR3 compatibilty. But DDR3 is so expensive that it makes me not want to do this. My question is.....

Which of the following options is the best?

4GB of DDR2 800Mhz

or

2GB of DDR3 1333Mhz

I know DDR3 is much faster.... but for RAM, is it better to have faster or more? Thanks for any help you can give.

  1. There'sa new Intel processor just around the corner.

Buy DDR3 although the speed gain is minimal, that is still a better choice.

(Buy some faster DDR3. Corsair-OCZ make some real fast modules, Go for 2x2GB sticks)

  2. very few applications can take advantage of DDR 3 just like the quad core CPU's. get a DDR3 board and put in DDR2 sticks. you would be better off going with 4gig of DDR2 and putting matched sets of either Kingston HyperX, OCZ, or crucial...

  3. The cost for the speed increases, at this time, are not worth it.  DDR2 dropped a tremendous amount in cost due to the Vista release (companies began producing larger amounts of memory, reducing the cost, thinking everyone was going to upgrade to Vista).

For now, the best option is the DDR2.  A second option you could consider is a MB that allows you to overclock the DDR2 memory.

  4. Quality over Quantity.

I guess DDR3 is quality so I would go with DDR3.
