RAM upgrade for Dell XPS 420?

my current is 4 333mhz 1gb rams i want a performance boost should i get (2) 2gb 800mhz ram stick or (4) 1gb 800mhz stick i want to see a performance boost my computer is slow with this ram please help me

  1. Well, in most case with DDR2 and 3 it's better to get seperate sticks of RAM. So in your case it sounds like the second option is better.

    Or you could always just get 8 Gigs of DDR3 at 1333Mhz.


  2. The general answer is Yes.

    Make sure you buy and install the correct RAM suggested by Dell.  Installinf faster RAM will not improve the performance any better than 2GB 800MHz DDR2 SDRAM which is recommended for that computer.  Buying RAM faster than 2GB 800MHz DDR2 SDRAM is just a waste of money.

    You have bottlenecked your processing power by using 333MHz RAM.

    This is equivalent to reducing a twelve lane highway to 3 lanes at peak rush time.

    2GB 800MHz DDR2 SDRAM should improve the speed of your Dell especially if you are Gaming, doing complicated calculations, intense graphics such as detailed, layered, 3D Auto CAD.
