  1. Odor

Rodents do have an odor. It is offensive to some people, not everyone.  Keeping the  cage clean will help to  keep it at a minimum level.

    Cost

Cost will be relative to where you live.

    Do rats make good pets

I know people that  are just as attached to their pet rats and mice as others are to  dogs , cats, or guinea pigs.  It just depends on your personal taste in pets.

I don't have any pet rats myself so i included some websites that should help you decide.

  2. Get the biggest cage you can afford & expect to spend at least $50 on it.....martinscages.com has some good ones!!  They stink if you don't keep their cage clean & if they get sick you HAVE to be willing to take them to the vet!!!

They make wonderful pets if you play & cuddle them a lot but you should get 2 of them

  3. They make great pets. Males smell worse than the females, but either of them kept in a clean environment aren't bad at all. I'm poor as dirt but I could afford having them as pets so they aren't too horribly expensive to care for... Make sure you don't have a male and a female, as you know, rodents multiply quickly.

The most important thing is to get the nutrition RIGHT.  Make sure you buy from someone who knows what they're doing, ask them what they've been feeding her, and try to continue that diet.

They will eat each other if they don't have the right kind of food.

Get the largest cage you can afford, and I recommend CareFresh bedding. Do NOT use pine or aspen bedding it'll stink baddd. Spot clean every day and change at least once a week.

  4. Oh rats are very fun pets, we had one who wanted all the time to be on someones shoulders. he was very spoiled.

the best cage litter we have found is recycled paper and it comes in colors too. it is long lasting unlike pine bedding that smells horrible when they pee. it does not last long either.

they need a good rat/small animal food. also needed is chew blocks or flavored shaped ones. their teeth keep growing like many other rodents. so they need to chew to keep them down to size. they need fresh vegies too, but not to many. i don't know about other peoples experiences but our rat loved to take baths in very shallow sink water.

you will have long time fun with your rat if you give it proper care. vet if needed! good luck
