RBC Canadian Open: Robert Garrigus remains winless in the 2012 PGA Tour season
For the second time in the PGA Tour season this year, Robert Garrigus came close to a victory and missed it by an inch in the final moments of the tournament.
Garrigus had the 56-hole lead at the RBC Canadian Open, held at the Hamilton Golf and Country Club.
The final round saw him make a start with 13 pars in a row prior to a birdie on the 14th hole. In the meantime, Scott Piercy also surged to the top of the leaderboard with a three-under par final-round score.
Therefore, Garrigus needed at least another birdie till the final hole in order to record the second PGA Tour victory of his career. However, he did not manage to take the pressure and bogeyed the 16th hole that dragged him down to share the second place
in the end.
“It's a lot of fun to be able to do what we do, and that's what we live for, having to birdie the last hole to get in the playoff or win the golf tournament. That's all I can ask. I just left it a bit short, and I'm sure I'll be thinking about that one,”
the 34-year-old American said.
According to him, he could have won the tournament with a huge margin. However, putting became the major hurdle, as he missed several chances of recording birdies during the final round.
While talking to the PGA Tour website, he told that he did not play well on the greens and misjudged most of his putts. As a result, he had to go for the 13-hole par streak rather than having few birdies on his scorecard.
“I should have won this golf tournament by seven shots. Everybody knows that,” he said. If I could have just made a putt today. I don't know. It just wasn't starting on my lines. I hit a couple too firm and then I hit a couple too soft. I just couldn't get
the feel for it”.
It was his second chance during the current season when he had to return home with a second-place finish. Previously, he lost to Luke Donald on the first extra hole of the playoffs at the 2012 Transitions Championship.
