RBC Canadian Open: William McGirt earns a spot in the FedEx Cup playoffs and 2012 PGA Tour season
Despite failing to earn his maiden PGA Tour title at the 2012 RBC Canadian Open by one stroke, William McGirt made it to the FedEx Cup playoffs and next year’s complete PGA Tour season.
McGirt carded a one-under par 69, his seventh round in 60’s in a row, to finish one stroke behind the winner Scott Piercy, who posted an impressive 67 for his second PGA Tour title.
“I'll take nothing but positives away from this week,” he said. “That's seven consecutive rounds in the 60s now. I just never gave myself enough chances today. Seemed like I had a lot of 30, 35 footers all day. But you know, I locked my card up for next
year, so that's a positive to take away from it”.
The 33-year-old American surged to the top of the leaderboard with a three-under par score through seven holes. He retained the sole lead until he faltered on the 15th hole for a bogey.
Still, he had the chance of maintaining his name on the top, which would have earned him a spot in the playoffs.
However, he once again made a mistake and suffered another bogey, which dragged him down to land in the share of the second position at the end of the tournament.
While talking to the PGA Tour website, he told that he would have loved to take the title home. However, he was a little unlucky to make it happen. Yet, he was happy because of the confirmation he received for his card for the next year’s PGA Tour season.
“My No. 1 goal coming into this week was to make sure I locked up getting in the Playoffs. My second goal was to make sure I locked up my card. I accomplished both of those today,” he said. “I would have loved to have won the golf tournament, but I played
very well all week”.
Robert Garrigus was the other player who tied for the second position with a 16-under par tournament score.
Garrigus was unlucky as far as his putting is concerned. He parred each of the first 13 holes, despite getting several chances for birdies.
As a result, he had to take the second-place finish for the second time in 2012. He lost to Luke Donald in the playoffs at the 2012 Transitions Championship also.
