RBC Heritage Golf Tournament purchases green energy for the fourth year - Golf News
The PGA Tour’s RBC Heritage Golf Tournament officials have yet again announced to purchase green power from Palmetto Electric Cooperative for the tournament.
This will mark the tournament’s fourth year since it started using green power for tournament operations.
Palmetto Electric Cooperative is basically a distributor of the green energy produced by the state-owned Santee Cooper, which is the only green power generation utility in Carolina.
Currently, it is the largest green power cooperative provider in the Carolina State.
Moreover, it was among the first cooperatives to distribute the renewable energy in the Carolina State in 2001.
Steve Wilmot, Tournament Director for the RBC Heritage, said that green technology is the best option to utilise, as the RBC Heritage Golf Tournament is one of the most significant sport events of the region.
Tom Upshaw, President and CEO of Palmetto Electric Cooperative, expressed his pleasure for being a partner with Santee Cooper to provide green power to the prestigious event on the PGA Tour.
He went on to say that it, in turn, allows them to promote the use of green power among the local residents and increase their knowledge about the development of technology.
The organisation will set a green power booth at the 18th fairway to educate the spectators on the course about the renewable energy and its advantages.
“Our strong partnership with Palmetto Electric Cooperative makes this Green Power event possible,” said Lonnie Carter, President and CEO of Santee Cooper.
He added, “The RBC Heritage Golf Tournament is a showcase event for South Carolina, its economic development opportunities and its environmental attributes.
“Having the power come from clean renewable energy is a perfect fit for one of the most beautiful and prestigious golf tournaments in the country,” he concluded.
According to the Heritage Classic Foundation that runs the tournament every year at Hilton Head Island, it will purchase 150 megawatt hours of green power.
There will be enough power to be consumed by the hospitality areas, scoreboards, sky boxes and broadcasting towers.
The tournament will be played at the Harbour Town Golf Links on Hilton Head Island from April 9 to 15, 2012.
