RBR’s Mark Webber blames Pirelli tyres for his tough starts in 2011 F1 season – Formula 1 news
Red Bull Racing driver Mark Webber has blamed Pirelli tyres for his tough starts to the races in the 2011 Formula 1 season so far.
Webber said that Pirelli tyres made his starts tough this year, as he has been unable to do well on them in the early stages of the races so far.
The team driver once again failed to retain his strong position in the starting laps of the recently held Singapore Grand Prix. After starting the race from the second position on the grid, he found himself in the fourth spot at the first corner of the Marina
Bay Street Circuit.
The team driver mentioned that it was hard for him to manage the grip away from the start and due to that, he could not cover the gap from his teammate Sebastian Vettel until the end of the Grand Prix.
The Australian commented, “The rules make it pretty challenging for engineers to get the starts right as launch control and other electronic aids that limit wheel-spin are not allowed. There is a lot of work for the drivers to do as well.”
He added, “I cannot give too much away but there are a number of procedures to go through before we get going. When the lights go out, we quickly release one clutch paddle on the steering wheel and feed in a second gradually - that's the one the driver uses
to modulate the grip of the rear wheels.”
The 35-year-old driver bounced back on the grid in the 2011 Singapore race weekend following his disappointing Italian Grand Prix. He retired from the Monza race due to having an accident.
In the Singapore race weekend, he started his Grand Prix from the second position on the opening grid and after putting all of his efforts, he came on the last stair of the podium in the final race classifications.
After completing the 14th round of the season at the Marina Bay Street Circuit, Webber is placed at the fourth place with 182 points in the 2011 drivers’ championship.
Let’s see how Webber manages the last five rounds of the 2011 season following his third position in Singapore.
