RBR’s Mark Webber says strong performance in qualifying round is vital – Formula 1 news
Red Bull Racing driver Mark Webber has said that strong performances in the qualifying round are vital in Formula 1 sport.
Webber added that better first stint from the race start to the first pitstop is also very important in Formula 1.
The team driver discussed the ongoing season and stated that at the beginning of the 2011 F1 season he had some reliability problems in his RB7 car and because of that, he could not improve in the initial races.
He also mentioned that he is happy with a few things, which he had in the season so far, but he has never reached 2010 season’s level, because he could not manage to be quick enough in the qualifying rounds until now.
The Australian driver also discussed his teammate Sebastian Vettel’s performance in the season and added that Vettel has remained exactly opposite from him throughout the season so far. He was very strong in qualifying on Saturdays and then very competitive
in the first part of the each race, when he gives his best.
Talking to reporters, Webber commented, “But in general, the three at the front do the same things in the race, covering for the others' strategies. When your rivals pit, you pit too. If instead you get left behind and need to fight to catch up, the tyres
degrade quickly.”
He went on to mention, “I need to work hard to come back strong next year. In the first part of the season I had difficulties with pit stops, while now I don't, but I still can't find a good race pace. It's like a puzzle: the next move is to fix the early
part of the race.”
The 35-year-old driver admitted that it is fact his RB7 car is quite different as compared to other F1 cars. He is hopeful of having more competitive car for the 2012 Formula 1 season.
After taking part in the 17 rounds of the season, Webber is placed at the fourth place with 221 points behind Ferrari’s Fernando Alonso in the 2011 drivers’ standings.
Let’s see how Webber manages the qualifying round and first stint of the race in last two rounds of the season.
