RC Airplane Laws in Canada?

Do RC planes require a pilot's license to fly in Canada?

I know nobody is going to bother me where I live but I want to know if the government ever put something in writing allowing or disallowing RC planes or if they just have to follow the aviation laws for real planes.

  1. No, they do not require a license.

I flew RC planes in my teenager years. I live close to CYUL and I am aware that I need to be at least 10 kilometers away from the airport. I received a letter from provincial police when I flew a RC helicopter from my back yard. But thats me, I'm really close to the airport

I don't know if there is a specific law stating the distance but you can be sure there is one.

I'm sure our government has a few laws about RC planes, but I'm sure they are not banned. There could some municipal bylaws too, probably about the noise, possible damage and safety issues. I suggest you head to the closest RC plane airport. Search it in the yellow pages.  That way, you'll be sure to be within the law.

And no, to fly an RC plane, you do not need to follow real aviation rules, unless perhaps if you are flying competition.
