Question:

RCA 52" Projection on the fritz.?

I've got a 52" rear projection from RCA, model number D52W19. One day, there was a popping noise and the TV went completely red for about five seconds, then it flickered a few times and shut down. For a few minutes I can't turn it back on but when I do it simply goes red, flickers and shuts down. Has anyone had this issue before? Is the flickering some sort of error code? I asked a friend who has a fair amount of knowledge in this field and he thinks I probably blew a capacitor. Is that what the popping noise was? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

  1. Anytime there is  a high voltage short in televisions they will more than likely shut down to protect other circuits. (shut down circuit)   There is a good chance you have a bad High Voltage tripler that supplies the high voltage to your CRTs.  That has always been a common problem for RCA projection tvs.   The tripler is breaking down and more than likely  leaking to ground.   Or the blue and green voltage are leaking internal inside that tripler.   Just hope it  has not damaged your CRTs.  Another possible problem could be the Red CRT could have  a cathode ray short and shutting down before it damages anything else.  Both jobs could be very expensive.   Anywhere around $300.00 to $450.00   I had rather the tripler be bad than the  CRT because when you change a new CRT  ( Red, Blue or Green )on that television the other CRTs are going to be a little weaker.  The technician could have little problem converging and setting up the drives and screen controls.  Also you may not ever have good gray  scale anymore without changing all three.  So that means the color quality may not be there like it was when it was new.   If the other CRTS check great on the CRT checker don't worry about not having a good gray scale.

  2. Bad red crt (picture tube)  Probably around $450-$550 in home repair--if you have that in your area.  I personally wouldn't put that much into it for the reasons the other poster stated--other crts can go bad---known to have bad flyback transformers also.
