I did not file a tax return for 2 or 3 years. I cashed in some IRA accts. I do not have money to pay anything right now. Who would be my best help in this situation..........an attorney? There are ads on TV ie: tax masters. They promise a rather large reduction in the amount due. Are those ads legitimate?

  1. Just file the returns on your own or have an account prepare them for you and if you owe once you file then request an installment agreement by completing Form 9465.

Divide the amount you owe by 60 months and that will be the minimum payment IRS will accept monthly.

IF you can't pay the IRS how do you plan to pay a high price tax person to do what you can do on your own.

For more information on installment agreeement visit IRS website, or call IRS at 1-800-829-1040.  IF IRS send you a letter to file then call the phone number listed on the letter.

  2. You don't need the extreme expenses of an attorney if you haven't done anything criminal.  It would be a good idea to contact the IRS ASAP to get your returns filed and get payments setup.  Right now you are incurring a penalty for not filing and another one for not paying (if you owe).  The sooner you get a return submitted for each year, the sooner the failure to file penalty will stop and you will just be incurring the failure to pay penalty.

Stay away from those TV shams.  They are talking about Offers In Compromises which are only accepted if you have nothing to your name - no car or house to sell, etc.

Make sure you are actually talking to the IRS and not some a poser.  There are a lot of tax scams out there.  The IRS normally contacts you by mail several times before trying to make personal contact.

If you do want somebody to represent you, your choices are an attorney (way too expensive if you haven't been trying to hide income or do something else criminal) or a CPA (fairly expensive) or and Enrolled Agent (more reasonably priced).  You can get an EA in some accounting firms or from H&R Block who has several EAs in each of their districts.   They can also help get your prior year returns filed for you.  Every city has a Block office or two that is open year around for things like this.

  3. thats sound ADD for me.

i know that IRS most likely contacted u are by MAIL.

even said in there websited...beware of those ppl claiming working from IRS esp by sending u by email or calling u.

my advice call to IRS...find out whats up w/that

  4. If your case has made it to the local IRS office, you have sat on your hands far too long.  The specific issue the revenue officer is dealing with is your failure to file your returns.  You need to prepare these returns (or have them prepared by a professional tax practitioner) and then deal with payment of the balance due.  Tax Masters or any of the other services you see advertised on TV are going to charge you an arm and a leg, maybe two legs for their assistance.

  5. I do not feel sorry for you at all.  I am glad that the IRS got you and I hoped you pay a lot.  Maybe now, you will obey the law.  This could of have been completely avoided but no you chose not to file your taxes.  I bet you have not file your state taxes either.

  6. Tax Masters will take your money then work out a dela to reduce your taxes. If the IRS accepts, it will also go against your credit.

Either way, you are going to pay. Just work out a payment plan with the IRS.
