Hi, I am wondering what the proper term for a roommate would be on the lease agreement? I signed a lease with my cousin and I am not moving in so I am handing a notice of removal from lease agreement with both of our signatures on it but I don't know what term to use for her on the notice....Do I use co-leaser or co-tenant? I am not sure and I would really like to know.

  1. What is so easy about that?  You cannot remove yourself from the lease without the approval of the landlord.  You are liable under the terms of the lease.  It is a written contract and you signed it.  You need to explain your situation and your wishes to the landlord and hope that they agree to change the terms of the lease and take you off of it.  Otherwise, you're stuck, and if your cousin doesn't pay the rent or damages the apartment, you'll be responsible too.

  2. You do not have to worry about such inane things.  If you are leasing then your landlord will direct you on what to do.  Whatever you do, do not lease from somebody that has signed a lease with another.  You must know what you are signing.  Educate yourself !!!

  3. I would use "co-leaser", that is what you are.  You are not a tenant since you do not reside there.  You are still a leaser though.
