  1. This site gives a template and some sample letters:

  2. be honest. just ask him what he wants you to say and think how you would act if you were in such a position. refference letters are usually used to scale a person. this may sound harsh but thats just what it is. if this person was dependent, came to work on time and did his job, was polite, never had troubles with anyone and so forth, this would be what you would say. dont be a stereotype and go pick up a template online.just write about how this person was and make sure its something thats honest. if he was a pain in the a**, i guess he wouldnt have come to you. so i think he really needs your help.

OK, in regard to it, write about what his job title was, what duties he did and that he was a great resource for the company while he was working there. also include your contacts, at least an email adress and a phone number. just in case anyone needs to verify what is in the letter( because most people forge letters of refference). just do to him what you would expect him to do for you if you were in a position like that.

PS: DONT, DONT pull the templates from the internet, you are a supervisor, and i guess it is intelligence that made you a supervisor, especially of an IT company, at least take five minutes of your time to make something real in case they call you and just ask you questions, if you pulled it from the net, then you probably wont have answers to the questions and you would have done more harm than good.
