  1. if you keep hitting switches youll short cycle it and blow the compressor you need to cpull it out and clean also see if you have charging ports other wize your going to call a pro do as much as you can before the tech gets there that will make it a little cheaper

  2. Check to see if ice has built up on the coils.  It will do that especially if it is real humid.  You may have to just turn it off for a while.

  3. The biggest problem with window a/c units is that the condenser coil gets dirty. The condenser coil is the coil on the outside of the house. If possible take the unit out of the window and wash the coil with a garden hose. Keeping running water through this coil till the water comes out clean...   Stay cool dude.

  4. I like Chuck's answer.  Absolutely check the coils for ice.  If there is ice on the coils the other problem that you could have is that you are low on refrigerant.  Unfortunately the only way to check that is if you have a liquid line sight glass and look for bubbles in the glass.  That means you are low on refrigerant.  The other way to tell is to check the amperage of the compressor as it is running.  I usually put my amp meter on the line and check how many amps it is pulling.  If it is reading lower than the units specification then it most likely needs refrigerant.  If you do not have the tools and refrigerant then you will never be able to repair the unit.  My suggestion is to buy a used unit.  Check your local newspapers.  I hope that was enough information to help you.
