Saw this either on National Geographic or Discovery or Travel Channel. Tunnels/passages are behind a closed door in restaurant. I thought it was Rome, but may be anywhere in Italy. Same presenter that did a show on Pompei. Little above average size presenter (man) with dark wavy hair Looks to be late 30's early 40's years old..

  1. Rome is full of "secret passages", because the present city is built on layers and layers of older versions, going right back to ca. 3000 years ago when it was founded. It was therefore relatively easy for present day inhabitants to "break into" an old passage and find their way (catacombe like) to "safety". I'm quoting you the text of a guided tour "Roma sotterranea" - underground Rome. You can write to the organizers and ask them if any "Jewish Restaurants in the Ghetto" are included. I doubt it, but you never know. I personally know of one place, called the Arciliuto (near via dei Coronari), where the cellars are part of Raphaels old Renaissance studio, but this is not in the old Jewish quarter.

Quote - not my text "Roma sotterranea organizes tours and guided visits in the subterranean of archaeological interest in the principal international languages. Our visits are available for singles and for groups, for conventions with tour operators and for offers of pre-arranged visits. We have the possibility of opening al or almost all the archaeological sites that are on the web site Roma sotterranea, and also a wide range that isn't actually reviewed and not available on-line at the moment.

You can contact us and tell us your needs. You will be immediately contacted by one of our operators, who will give you all the information necessary. Our offers vary from a single guided visit to a one-day or more plan, inclusive of meals and all necessary extra services.

•Walking Tour - They are tours will lead you through the most famous monuments, roads and gardens as well they will get you to know the most hidden and secret places of Rome. •Single Tour - They are archaeological sites chosen in order to include the origins of subterranean Rome and to include the variety of the archaeological sites present underground. We have selected some single tours which although acquaint us with the city's underground heritage, are not too exacting economically or in terms of time.

•Museum - Simply a Museum list of the present museums to Rome.

•Quality - It's a feedback where you can express your opinion on the guided visits organized by Roma sotterranea."

  2. Edward W is correct, the restaurant is Gigetto. If you ask your waiter there he will show you the room with the secret passageway in it where Jews hid. The Pontifical North American College in Rome also has underground rooms where Jews were hidden and pretected during WW2

  3. Could be Gigetto in the Jewish Ghetto in Rome.  Have eaten there many times and never heard of the passage, but it's just a thought.
