So I'm DESPERATELY trying to get a job for the year before I go back and do my Masters degree... I have been passing out resumes for the past FOUR MONTHS AND STILL DONT HAVE A JOB because ppl keep telling me I'm overqualifed cause they think I'm looking to start my career... should I actually put on my resume that I am only seeking a year of employment and that I can guarentee them a year? Or should I not say that I'm going back to school? So far I haven't said I'm going back to school so ppl think I'm trying to start my career.. but this has not landed me a job. What should I do? How should I WORD my objective? Should I say that I'm trying to save up money by working for the year and will be giong back to school the following year?

  1. a good resume no longer has an objective....instead, write a "summary of qualifications"

  2. MENTION THAT on your applications.

Including that "you are seeking temporary employment" informs the employer of your primary objective.

In the Interview you can mention your ultimate objective.

  3. A lot of people are hesitant to hire temporary workers, because they want long time employees. But, you have to let them know up front.

Write that you are looking for temporary employment for approximately (however long you think that you will stay there) before you go back to school and complete your education. They don't need to be told what or what you are not doing with your money...that's insignificant information.

People like short, accurate, to the point information on resumes.

    Best Wishes

  4. I disagree with Longhorn.  A good resume always has an objective.  Your objective is to fill whatever job you are applying for and it can be changed to suit every job you apply for.  For instance,

    OBJECTIVE

Part-time advertising / marketing / production position that will allow me to use my excellent business acumen, as well as organizational, writing, and computer skills.

It's tough being over-qualified.  But don't dumb down your resume.  Instead, re-write it to put emphasis on what the employer is looking for.

  5. I used this resume writing service in my area, this is the email address, (resume.help50@yahoo.com) you should try them, it only cost me $35.00 and I got a great job from this new resume, I never thought about the format that they use but the turn around time was less then 24 hrs. I would have to say it was the best service I have ever used and it was worth every dime. Also they let me pay through paypal.

  6. I'm not of the belief that a resume should have a generic objective. I think that any statement saying what you want out of the experience should be specific for the job you're applying for.

If you are looking for a limited amount of employment, I would be up front about the fact that you are not looking to start a career- that way, they don't feel deceived if you do have to leave.

On the whole, I can think of two ways to do this:

    (1) Find a job that will allow you to do your Master's, while still working- some companies will pay tuition and fees, and I would look into something like that.

    (2) Look in a situation where you aren't going to be expected to stay, like a temp agency. It may not be one job that you keep for the full year, but at least you won't be expected to stay there.

Hope this helps- best of luck!
