  1. I´m Brazilian and I say :

    1) Rio is a very dangerous for everyone ; During my vacations I prefer another places ( northeaster states or Santa Catarina in south ).

    2) Today Real have a ´´strong value `` in relation with Dollar

    1US $ = 1,80 R$

    3) But in other hand Rio still the most beautiful coast city and have the most joyfully people in Brazil.

  2. Best metropole tio live in, and/or visit, on earth!

Don't believe the horror stories: It's still less dangerous, expensive, etc. than many places, even of smaller proportion, in the so-called "1st" world.

And: Most victims provoke their own disgraces, by being in the wrong place and/or at the wrong time and/or doing the wrong thing ... as anywhere else on this planet.

  3. Sorry but that "Help" really needs help. it is discussing. But anyways, yes Rio de Janeiro has changed a bit.

    1) Definitely not unbelievably cheap. Prices are high in Brazil in general specially on big cities. If you are coming from the US don't forget the dollarXreal now is only $1.76, so you will feel the price in Brazil

    2) It continues to be a dangerious city and as many brazilians may tell you, it got worse! But hey Rio still one of the most beatiful and exciting city on earth in my opinion.

Ayblog: I am Brazilian and I really wish you were right. The media plays a big part on the situation in Rio, but it is also a reality. The situation is out of control but that doesn't mean if you are in Rio, something for sure will happen. Maybe not if you are caution.  But it is dangerious.

Also less dangerous to which place you are comparing it to? Countries in Africa having civil war? Gaza? Rio de Janeiro is prooved to be one of the most unsafe places on earth. It is very unfortunate, and as I said before I wish you were right and things were different in my country.

    :)

  4. Yes, Rio is dangerous, I was there last year. If you go as a tourist and look like one you are more likely to get bothered. I lived there till I was 12 and miss it but it DEPENDS where you go. Stay away from favelas, and go to better beaches like Barra da Tijuca, Ipanema, for instance, instead of the famous Copacabana. Too many icky hookers there!

  5. Help is still there. (they have some commercial lease and it seems it´s impossible to remove them)

    Lord Jim closed years ago

Che Michou is still in Buzios and in rio.

Cost of living is VERY high.

Rio in the 90´s was around 135 in the world bank list of most expensive city, now its 34.

With the overvalued Real the cost of living in Brazil has gone thru the roof.

I think if you came back you would find that a lot changed in 15 years. (I´m assuming you lived here before the Real became the currency).
