Question:

RJ45/10baseT wiring

I expect that this is a very simple affair, but I am looking for help all the same! I want to connect two PCs to each other direct, without using a hub, each PC with a lan card with 8wire RJ45 sockets. I have two ready-made 8wire patch leads to connect the PCs to the wall outlets. Do I have to use all 8 wires for the house wiring, or can I do it with just 4? (2 twisted pairs) If so, which of the 8 connections are used? Do any of the house wires between the two wall sockets have to be crossed over - null modem fashion as in RS232 days? The wall outlet sockets that I've bought have info sheets that don't resemble the sockets in any way, so I'm completely stuck!  :( Grateful for any help offered. Dave.
