Some colleges have a RN-BSN program. But in order to get into the RN-BSN, do you have to be a RN? because I'm in High school. I want to become a RN. And then later on work my way up. I know one college that has a program I need, its called York College of Pennsylvania, my cousins girlfriend goes there, but what other colleges are there? And what program should I be looking for, RN-BSN or RN (if there's such a program), what program, I don't know?

  1. There are two routes to become a registerd nurse (RN).  The R part (or registered) you get from the state after you pass the board exam.  The nursing DEGREE you get from a school.

You can do this 2 ways (both will get you a RN):

    1. community college associated degree

    2. bachelors (BSRN) program

There are many programs for both; look under your state nursing board web page (or try allnurse.com).  Do NOT attend one that is for profit--they cost way too much. Attend a city, or state college.  Meanwhile take all the science classes you can.  Your high school counselor can probably help as well.

  2. Yes, in order to do the RN-BSN program you must be an RN already. They have these programs for people who got their Associate's in nursing or other alternative nursing diploma and became an RN through those programs, but now want to further their education with a Bachelor's degree in nursing. For a high school student wanting to be a nurse, I would recommend doing the Bachelor's in nursing when you get to college, because having a Bachelor's allows you greater opportunity for advancement in your career and if you want a Master's later most programs will require you have your Bachelor's in nursing to even apply. The Bachelor's in nursing (BSN) should take the 4 years that any other major in college will take to complete.
