Messenger RNA carries the genetic sequence information for the construction of proteins.  mRNA basically carries the instructions so that amino acids can be assembled in the correct order forming the polypeptide.  Transfer RNA is important in this process as well but only serves to carry amino acids to the ribosome for incorporation into the polypeptide chain.  It is the mRNA that actually carries the protein code.
