Question:

RNLI vs Coast Guard?

As a free marketeer I stongly support the RNLI where I can.

As a taxpayer I am forced (by threats to my liberty) to support the Coast Guard.

Do the coast guard actually do anything that the RNLI could not do (assuming the RNLI had the funding).

  1. The coastguard are just that.  they guard the coast.  Monitoring shipping, looking for illicit cargoes etc - as well as rescue work.  To be a coastguard is a career choice.

The RNLI consists of volunteers who 'scramble' to rescue those in distress at sea.

I strongly support the RNLI, donate money to them, but I can see a difference between the two organisations.

  2. It's not a fair comparison. The RNLI should be funded too. It is a National disgrace that they must rely on handouts from the public. (Whom, btw, love the RNLI).
