ROM's? Help? Confused!?

Ok, what exactly are ROM's? I went round a friend's house and saw that he had a game from N64 on his laptop! When I asked he said he used a ROM, but what are they? How do they work? Is it safe to download/install/whatever you do with it? Please give detailed answers, and explain exactly how they work and where you can get them. Thanks :D

it is a game that is used in an emulator. it is a game that has been put into a file, and the emulator that is specifically made to run that file runs it.sometimes it is safe, if you find the real version, but many times you will wind up with spyware trying to get the real one.
