RPE (Rapid Palate Expansion) questions.

Today i just got my RPE. It didn't hurt putting it on but i felt some pressure everytime it was turned. I'm keeping it for about 4 weeks, so i have several questions about it.

1. At the moment, I talk with a lisp. How long before I can speak normally?

2. What can I eat/drink? Currently, I'm having trouble swallowing my own saliva o__o' I normally just spit it out every once in awhile. And i'm scared to drink/eat alot of stuff D:

3. What can break my RPE? My doctor said it CAN break but he didn't tell me what can break it.

Thank you :]

  1. 1. It really depends on how fast you get use to it

it took me 2-3 weeks to talk normal (i had mine for a really long time)

    2. you can drink anything since its a liquid

try eating soft foods like apple sauce, mashed potatoes, peas, bananas, ect

    avoid hard things like apples,ice,pretzels,ect

sometimes you might experience tenderness and soreness on your gums and teeth

    3. im not really sure what can break it

mine did break though only because they didnt glue one side to my tooth all the way and it was like halfway on my tooth

  2. When I first got mine, I learned to push the food to the back of my throat with my tongue. Push it past the expander and down into your throat. It's hard and it'll take some time. It was so obnoxious at first but before you know it, you'll be swallowing like normal again.

As for breaking it, I wouldn't chew gum or anything, because that can get stuck all up in there and it won't be good. I'm not sure about the lisp. I had mine when I was so young, I don't remember much.

It's tough and annoying but you can do it! Good luck.
