Question:

RPM Gauge for 2 stroke Engine?

I am installing an RPM gauge on my boat. The engine is a 2 stroke. Is there a special gauge that I have to use? Will a standard RPM gauge work? I never thought about it until I was going to install one on my boat. Is there a difference between RPM's on a four stroke compared to a 2 stroke engine?

  1. Outboards can use several different tach settings. When you get your outboard tach if you look at the back of it you'll see a "pulse" setting. This is based on the number of windings in your engines stator or the output of it's ECM. Your best bet is to look at your owners manual or a good service manual to find the setting that matches your engine.

Two and four strokes both use the same style tach... but both need to be set to the right pulse setting based on the application
