Question:

RT to RN "Fast Track" Programs?

I've been a Respiratory Therapist for four years now and feel trapped. There aren't many opportunities for RTs and I would like to get into a clinic setting. I was thinking about becoming a RN so that I could work in a clinic, or even go further and become a Nurse Practitioner. Are there any online programs that fast track a RT to their RN?

  1. Do you hold an associate's degree or a bachelor's degree?

Nursing courses themselves are unique and nothing from your RT program would transfer in a way that you'd take less nursing courses. But if you've completed science courses like biology and chemistry with labs, a&p, etc., and if you've completed all the general education requirements (English, math, etc.) then all you need is to take nursing courses - either to earn your associates or your BSN.

There are a handful of RN programs available online but for initial licensure you usually have to sit classroom time, and of course do clinicals. You might be able to do a handful of nursing courses online at some schools but not 100% of the program. The online programs for nursing are usually for the RN to BSN programs when you already hold the RN license.

I have never personally heard of any specific programs tailored to RT to RN.

    Good luck!

  2. FAST TRACK? Not sure about that, but here in Middle GA, there IS a school with a "bridge" program for RT to RN. It is the same program for LPNs and EMTs. You nave to have taken BOTH A&P classes (with labs) and Microbiology (with a lab) before you can apply. You go two years after that. I've never asked my friend, but I'm pretty sure it is an Associate's degree, but you wouldn't have to do much more for the BSN at another school later.

  3. check out http://www.jchs.edu/page.php/prmID/87.  they have a program specifically for rt to rn.  also rue education has a program that is self-study/driven that allows you to sit for your rn boards.  good luck!
