RX8 rear fender patch?

Question

Has anyone noticed that there is a small patch area on the rear fender of the RX8 near the rear wheel, what purpose does it have? I'm curious.

Do you mean the applied patch in front of the rear wheel well, just behind the rear doors?

If so, that is a stone guard patch. It's there to prevent stone chips on the fender flare. You see them on other cars like Porsche 911's.
