I was feeding my rabbit this morning and I noticed he was sneezing. I got a tissue and put it to his nose to see if there was discharge. There was a clear discharge. He is drinking and eating fine. His litter is Yesterday's News. I DON'T KNOW, SHOULD I WORRY, TAKE HIM TO THE VET???? Any info would help, thank you SO much!

  1. Could be a mild upper respiratory infection. Take him to the vet now, since it's easier to treat infections early on. They vet can determine if it is an infection, and if necessary, prescribe antibiotics.

Here's a list of safe antibiotics for rabbits:

Make sure to get a SAFE antibiotic or it'll do more harm than good!

Mild URIs can be cleared up easily if caught and treated early, so don't wait until it gets worse to go to a vet.

  2. If the discharge is clear and he has no other symptoms, give it a day and see if the sneezing stops, his nose could just have been irritated by something.  If he's still sneezing tomorrow, I'd get him checked out by a vet, it could be a mild upper respiratory infection.

As far as the shedding, it's normal.  All rabbits shed quite a bit most of the year 'round, and shed extremely excessively 3 times a year.  You can keep it to a minimum by brushing your rabbit daily.  I would recommend a brush called the "Zoom Groom".  It's a cat brush with wide, soft rubber teeth that does a really good job at removing dead hair from your bunny.

  3. He could just have something up his nose or he could be sick. If he keeps sneezing take him to the vet.

As for shedding, some rabbits shed their baby fur (at about 4 months).

  4. All the vets who've answered your question have done a way better job than I can, and I'm not a vet - basically, take him to the vet.  With rabbits, any kind of respiratory infection can be very dangerous.  It's better safe than sorry.

On the other hand - speaking as someone who has a pet rabbit with allergies (yes, my rabbit has allergies) - my pet rabbit is allergic to her own fur.  Yes, I am serious.  If he's shedding a lot, all of that fur could be irritating his nose, causing him to sneeze.  The shedding is normal and you can't stop it, but try brushing him twice a day with a soft pet brush and vacuuming around his living area regularly (every day when he's shedding badly).  You should brush him anyway, because l*****g up so much loose fur can cause him to develop a hairball, which could make him sick.  If you have a HEPA filter, try putting it in the room with him, that helps my bunny a lot.

Still, a visit to the vet wouldn't hurt, especially if he hasn't been lately. Rabbits need regular checkups, just like dogs and cats.

  5. This happened to my rabbit, He had hay stuck up his nose. Anything that gets trapped up there nose can cause them to sneeze. Take him to the vets.

  6. as a vet tech, i know that pets can get upper respiratory infections, but im not sure if rabbits do...i would call your regular rabbit vet and ask....i would do it for you but im off work today...please let me know what happens, i will prolly need to know one day!

  7. vet time! If in doubt, get him checked out! Sneezing can mean a small cold to a more serious disease, which could be causing him to shed fur. Are you sure he isn't plucking his own fur out? This indicates stress, which could be caused by pain. Keep calm and take him to the vet!
