Question:

Rabbit and Guinea-pig friends?

by  |  earlier

Me and my sister fell in love with a cute rabbit and a guinea-pig. The rabbit is a girl and the guinea-pig a boy. We kept them in the same cage for a while but the guinea-pig was being a boy and was annoying the rabbit so we had to separate them before she started biting him.

We got the rabbit spayed as it's meant to help make female rabbits calmer and will make it less likely for it to get cancer etc.

My rabbit can still be quite aggressive, is there any way I can stop this? And will I ever be able to put the rabbit and guinea-pig back together, if not only when they're out of their cages?

  1. I'm glad to hear you have separated the rabbit and guinea pig and that you have had the rabbit spayed.

Guinea pigs and rabbits should never be kept together for many reasons.

Firstly, they have slightly different dietary requirements. Although both need hay and veggies, they need pellets specific for their species.

Another big problem is that rabbits are larger and much more powerful than guinea pigs, and are quite capable of seriously injuring or even killing one. Even if they seem to get along, it has been known for a rabbit to buck when spooked and accidentally kill a pig.

I would suggest you keep the two animals separate at all times - it is just too risky.

However, both rabbits and guinea pigs are social species and need the company of their own kind. If possible, you should consider adopting another rabbit as a companion for your first, and another guinea pig.

  3. I hope you don't mind me copying my answer from one I *just* answered a minute ago. Here it is:

It is never a good idea to mix rodent species.

Rabbits are carriers of bordetella, which can be fatal if contracted by your piggies.

Rabbits are very territorial. They also have a tendency to hog food, so the rabbit gets plenty & the piggies end up malnourished. Some rabbit pellets contain antibiotics that are harmful to piggies, so you wouldn't want your piggies eating them.

Even in play, a rabbit's back legs are very powerful. One kick can maim or kill a piggie.

Its just best to keep them separate.
