I'm a rabbit breeder, have been for 4 years. I have does now that are about 4 years old. When is it time to stop using them for my breeding stock? Is there a certain age they have a lot of troubles kindling? I have mini lops, mini rexs, dwarfs, lionheads, rexs, and fuzzy lops... so they are all pretty small breeds, execpt my rexs.

Thanks!

  1. I think they have trouble kindling when toy are younger. But as they get older, its easier.

  2. You should neuter them all and keep them as pets for the rest of their lifespan like a reputable breeder would.

It's prerry irresponsible to cull them.

  3. I have a couple of fuzzy lop does that are 4 and still breeding safely and no problem, but I don't breed more than 2 times a year.

Some of it depends on how often you breed.  If they've been on a heavy breeding schedule, they may be well deserved of a rest soon.  But I do know some breeders who use their does up until about age 6.

Doesn't so much have to do with trouble kindling as it does that repeated breedings and the energy it takes to raise their young can take alot out of your animals.

If your litters are getting smaller, it's probably a good indication to retire the doe.
