Rabbit fell down the stairs, now she's peeing red. Help?

Yesterday morning my rabbit fell down a flight of stairs, but seemed fine the whole day after the incident. Now today her behaviour is normal, same as usual, but she has a very reddish coloured urine. It's outside of usual verterinary hours at my ver right now, and it's 100 dollars to take her in, and then the fee on top of that for diagnosis and treatment. I have heard it could be just a difference in diet, should this red be a cause for concern?

  1. Take her to the emergency vet. Geez.

  2. yes, take it to the vet ASAP

  3. Have it put to sleep.

  4. It doesn't really sound like a problem to me. Usually if there is blood in the urine, it will be difficult to see. Blood does not cause the urine to be dark red, like many people believe. Like you said, it is usually just because of a dietary need or issue. If you've started feeding something different or new, or a new brand lately, that could be it. Either way, it should be gone within a few days. I'd say if it lasts longer than 3-4 days, it may be time to consult a vet. But I highly doubt that it is in any way related to the accident if she is acting normally otherwise.

That being said, please keep a baby gate across the stairs, preventing your rabbit from falling again. Since rabbits hop, they cannot navigate stairs as easily as a walking animal like a dog or cat. It is easy for them to get up, but they have trouble coming back down.

  5. Take it to the vet. When you have a pet you shouldn't have trouble spending money for its well-being. Sure it could be nothing, but it could also be something really serious! Better safe than sorry!

  6. No matter what the price is, you should take her to the vet's.  And how could you just let your rabbit fall down a flight of stairs???  If you want your rabbit to live, then go to the vet's.

  7. Well I know rabbits can't process minerals so they pee them out wich can give them a weird color. Than a change of diet is a possible cause too. If she is still normal in the next few days and the peeing becomes more "natural" like before, i guess she is okay. But if you see a change of behavior i would advise you to see a vet or call a place that could give you professional help with that (i'm sure there's always a number you can find for this kind of thing )

  8. Well put the two things together and she probably has internal injury. I find it odd that she fell down stairs then red urine.  If you really care about your animal then money is not a object. I would take her to the vet, or else she might end up on your dinner plate.

  9. Have rabbit for dinner.

  10. I would be very worried if I were you.

  11. i have been alarmed before finding very red looking wee from our male but sometimes their urine is very concentrated it looks like this if she was hurt there would be significant behaviourial changes. rabbits can get red urine due to betacarotenes in food and two rabbits on the same diet could have totally different coloured wee , some rabbits cannot absorb the colorants from things such as carrot and spinach,

if it was blood it would be the sign of a bladder or uterine condition which would most unlikely been caused by a fall unless she was pregnant them it may be a spontaneous abortion. if shes not in pain monitor her her urine may go back to yellowish , a vet can determine if its blood , but don't get over stressed they are very resiliant if worried could you prehaps phone and ask a vet nurse for advice.hope shes ok let us know

  12. If the red urine had not come right after the accident, I would not be worried as red urine is very common in rabbits.

However, it seems suspect since she just feel down the stairs. It is much better to be safe than sorry. I would take her into a veterinarian as soon as they open.

I realize a veterinarian is expensive, but providing health care is commitment we make when we bring pets into our lives.

  13. It could be an internal injury of some sort, keep a close eye on it for the next few days,if it's not better by then ,take it to the vet.

  14. red urine is quite common in rabbits- its cause by a colouring in foods (like carrots) and is nothing to worry about.

  15. take her to the vet as soon as possible. Theres nothing you can do yourself but they can do so much

  16. The poor animal is bleeding internally..Take it to a free place if you have one near your hometown...Poor rabbit... She may be in pain..

  17. Any time there is blood in the urine, it should be checked out by your veterinarian. Unless you are feeding her something with a lot of red dye in it, it's blood. This could be a serious problem. Take her to the vet's on Monday.  First thing.

  18. WAIT 24 HOURS TO SEE IF IT CHANGES IF IT DOESNT GET A PROFESIONAL TO CHECK HER OUT MAYBE A FAMILY FRIEND WHO WONT CHARGE YOU

  19. Ughm yeah! If you care a/b your animal you should take her to the vet. No questions asked.

  20. You have to analyze the cost of repairs vs the cost of a new rabbit.  If you can get a new rabbit for less than $100 then the best course from  an economic point of view is see if the present one makes it.  If you have your own money and don't mind spending $100 plus on something which could just as easily become stew, then you can consider the emotional attachment into the equation.

Sometimes things that are not worth doing from a strictly economic standpoint are done on the basis of sentiment and emotion, feelings which are essentially a human weakness.

  21. i would search online for diagnosis

  22. Usually when a rabbit has blood in their urine it is not so obvious, it is kind of difficult to see.  My rabbits' urine changes when the weather changes or they eat something different, or when they are going through a shed.  It can become dark red or orange.  I would say no  need to rush to the vet if she is otherwise acting ok.

  23. I wouldn't risk it and assume that this is a diet thing.  She could have internal injuries from her fall. Go to a vet!
