Rabbit sprinting like crazy in cage normal?

i'v had my 6 months old rabbit for about 2 weeks now. she lives in a cage inside my house. and i take her out of her cage to roam about in my house for awhile everyday.

she hasnt done much since i got her, but last night, she was sprinting back and forth like crazy in her cage. is that normal? is this a sign that she needs more exercise?

btw i cant let her out into the backyard because i have an extremely large dog (alaskan malamute) who will most definitely eat her!

should i buy a rabbit leash or something? so i can take her out and she wont be able to get away.

Thanks :D

(sry for all the questions, i'm new to rabbits)

  1. This is a sure sign of happiness!! Rabbit especially young ones will Sprint,do flips, huge hops, this can mean 2 things,1 meaning the bunny is VERY happy & 2 meaning the bunny is trying to let of steam! It not to do with needing more exercise as i keep some of mine in HUGE 8ft by 5ft hutches/runs permanently & i often see them flip & sprint round the cage! Rabbit leashes can be good though it can take a long time to train them to walk properly in one, what you are doing at the moment is perfectly fine! She is just very happy! Well done!

Hope this helps & good luck with your new bun!. x*x

  2. That means she is packed full of energy. Let her run around your house an hour (at the least) a day. I have a siberian husky, so I know exactly what you mean by you cant let her outdoors. I have had my bunny for a year, and she is the same way. Also, a heads up, she will shed alot near summers end, so dont worry about it.

  3. It could be because it wants to run around more outside its cage. My rabbit sometimes does that when it wants to come out. Even when you did let it out before sometimes they want to be out more than inside their cage. Ya try getting a leash if you want.

  4. she can be scared that there is a dog around, she senses it with her ears and nose.

or she is terrified of the small space and needs to be active. You can lock the dog in a room of 15 minutes and let the rabbit roam free, but keep an eye on him/her.

But then again, the rabbit might smell the dog's urine and its smell just naturally around the lawn.

I wouldnt get a leash, becuase to rabbits, thats not enjoying the outside.

Try to take him/her to a vacant closed area, maybe to a friends backyard who doesnt have pets,or something like that:)

Hope that Helps and Good Luck

  5. That means she is starting to feel comfortable in her new home that she is willing to run around. Soon you will see her sprinting around the room when you let her out and doing happy bunny jumps.

She is young, baby bunnies always have a lot of energy.

Since you are new to rabbits this is a great site that goes over different cage set ups and litterbox training, spaying and neutering and diet: http://www.sandiegorabbits.org/

It really helped me with my 4.

  6. i have 2 small rabbits...they do that all the time, i have leashes 4 them but they don't like it....but then that's just my rabbits.....i let my rabbits out of their cage to run around the family room and my room....if their potty trained to a litter box u can just bring that out of the cage and place it a corner...
