Question:

Rabbits: Let me ask you a questions about rabbits....and death

We have 2 rabbits.

We went away on vacation for 2 weeks and left them both PLENTY of food and water.

MORE than we would have given them if we were at home feeding them everyday.

We get back from our 2 week vacation and they are both alive and fine.

The 1 is out of water, so we give it water right when we get back.

The next day the 1 rabbit starts to freak out in its cage! We heard it from the other room and ran in to see what it was doing....and it was dead.

Not breathing weird or still moving alittle, but by the time we got to the other room it was completely stiff and dead lying on its back.

So my questions are: Do you think it could have died because of lack of water even though it was given water right when we got back and it was the day after.

Or do you think it died because of something else? If so what?

Is what I described a common way for a 5 year old mini-rex rabbit to die?

  1. 2 weeks is too long to leave a pet without having somebody check on it.. you have no idea how long it was without water, it could have drank so much from being so thirsty it over loaded its system.

(some people died after starving in the holocaust when they got food, because they ate so much their stomachs which were used to less food - exploded)

you should know most home insurance companies dont cover you if you are away for more than 72 hours without somebody checking your home, so you should have somebody check your home and pets every 2-3 days at least.

NO it is NOT a "common" way for a bunny to die.. most owners NEVER would have left it that long without being checked.

  2. I'm usually pretty nice on Yahoo Answers...

    ...but you're an idiot.

  3. It could have possible died as a result of not having water.

You truly do not know when the water intake stopped.

When the digestive track is depleted of water in any animal there is a binding up, not to mention the other body systems that are effected.

The centeral nervous is the first to be depleted and it is slow to recoup.

That affects the brain which controls it all.

Also, a rabbit's health is affected by the weather, they don't like it too hot or too cold.

I know you are feeling bad about the lost to your beloved pet.

    Don't be hard on yourself.

Rabbits have strong back legs and could have kick the water over @ anytime. But, next time you go away for an extended stay, have a neighbor or a pet sitter look in on your pet.

  4. idk how it could have died.

next time u go on vacation though, i would have a neighbor or family come by everyday and check on ur animals. maybe even feed them. i wouldn't trust that my rabbits could have enough food and water for 2 whole weeks.

  5. Rabbits can not look after their selves in a hutch, anything could have happened to them. You really should of got a friend to look after them or booked them in for boarding at a rabbit boarders.

Was the rabbit squeeking when you heard him? If he was that means he was petriffed! and more then likley had a heart attack!!!  I breed mini rexs and i have never had 1 die like that!!!!! Something was seriously wrong, please please do not leave them like that again that is cruel!

  6. YOU ARE NOT CAPABLE OF LOOKING AFTER A RABBIT.

    THATS RIDICULAS!

IM A RABBIT BREEDER AND THINK YOUR A DISGRACE!

    MAKES ME SICK

  7. Rabbits can go a couple days with out water so it wasn't that. so idk wat happened.  Sorry for your lost.  Also if you go away for more than a day make sure you have a friend or someone to take care of them for you!!!!!!!!!

  8. idk...but it seems like it had some sort of seizure or spasm

    sorry to hear about it....
