Rabita Baku scores speedy win over Dresdner SC of Germany – Volleyball news
The women’s volleyball club team from Azerbaijan, the Rabita Baku, exhibited a stellar performance in their latest match, which was played on Tuesday, January 10, 2012.
Sarhadchi Sport Olympic Center in Baku hosted the contest, where large number of local volleyball fans showed up. Rabita Baku was challenged by Germany’s Dresdner SC. The hosts posted 3-0 (25-17, 25-17, 25-16) victory over the visiting team and added another
win to their tally at the prelims of 2012 CEV Women’s Champions League.
The Azerbaijani team maintained its dominance in Pool B and did not allow the Germans to hinder their performance in the fifth leg of prelims.
Rabita Baku’s success was chiefly credited to the brilliant captain Natalya Mammadova, who played an instrumental role in her team’s victory. She contributed match high 20 points and gave much to celebrate to the fans. She was named the best player of the
match.
It was the second meeting of Rabita Baku with German Dresdner SC in the league round of the tournament. Previously, Rabita Baku defeated the Germans at the home soil during the first leg of the preliminaries. This time, Rabita Baku was in host’s seat and
Germans were labelled as a guest team.
Using the competitive advantage, the hosts started out well in the match. They rallied a 5-0 run, which put the Germans under pressure. The powerful serves and unstoppable spikes by Mammadova did not let the German ladies to stand on their feet.
With better combination of attack and defence, Rabita Baku controlled the operations of game throughout the first set. Dresdner SC could not take lead for single time and trailed behind. They scored only 17 points, while Rabita Baku seized the first set
at 25-17. The first set continued for 22 minutes and finally ended in Azerbaijan’s favour.
After winning the first set, Rabita Baku continued with strong offense and defence in the next frame. The Ukrainian setter of Rabita Baku showcased a wonderful game, while middle blockers and outside hitters added more fuel to Dresdner SC’s injury. The German
ladies could not penetrate the power of sharp spikes and slipped another set from their hands. Rabita Baku improved to 2-0 by posting 25-17 in the second set.
German captain Stefanie Karg tried to bring her team back in the game but her efforts went futile. Azerbaijani players proved to be too strong for Germans and pulled off success in the match by winning third set in row. Third set reached its end with final
score of 25-16.
Serbian-born head coach Zoran Gajic of Rabita Baku said, “We wanted to win this match in straight sets and I am very happy with the result.”
Meanwhile, his German counterpart Alexander Waibl stated, “Rabita is a great team and I think they can win this competition being already one of the favorites for the crown.”
