  1. you need to buy better garbage cans with weighted lids. they cost more money but will save you time and save the enviorment. I use the rubbermaid brute ones. they work if you remember to put the lids on. and if you dont want to do that. tie a brick to the top of the current ones and make sure they are always closed.

  2. You need bear proof cans.  Raccoons are the smartest.  You can buy cans with locking lids.  I now use the cinch sacks and tie them securely, to keep odors in. If I eat meat I double sack the bones using grocery sacks.  I gave up on chasing them away.  I tried one of those big squirt guns with ammonia. It didn't bother them much.  I know they are still around(they still climb my fruit trees) but don't bother the garbage cans.

  3. once they learn its free food the battle is on-lol-build a wooden cage around cans with lid and clasps and locks-or buy can with lids that lock on-coons very intelligent might take a few laps to out smart them

  4. Get metal garbage cans with tight lids.  Put rocks or a cinder block in bottom of garbage can which prevents it tipping over.

They will chew through plastic and their nimble fingers can open many latches.
