Race Direction: Marco Simoncelli died of multiple injuries to head, neck and chest at Sepang
Medical Director at MotoGP Race Directions, Michele Macchiagodena revealed the details that caused Marco Simoncelli’s death.
Macchiagodena said, “I’m very sad to be here to report about the death of Marco Simoncelli, a friend. Because of the crash he had during the race, in which he was hit by other riders, he suffered a very serious trauma to the head, to the neck and the chest.”
The Race Direction’s complete bench, FIM representative Claude Denis, Dorna Sport representative Javier Alonso, rider’s representative Franco Uncini and the IRTA representative Paul Butler were the conductors of the presser along Macchiagodena.
The Italian MotoGP star died during the Malaysian Grand Prix held last Sunday. San Carlo Honda Gresini rider Simoncelli had a low side at a turn and slid off the race line at the Sepang International Circuit.
Super Sic was hung onto his machine while trying to regain the control, but the closing up bike of Colin Edwards of Monster Yamaha Tech3 slammed into the right side of Simoncelli’s bike.
Edwards’ hit also caused closely riding Valentino Rossi of Ducati Team to lose control of his bike. However, Rossi managed to stay on his bike after a strong shake and returned to pits.
On the track, Simoncelli laid unconscious and as Edwards’ bike ran over him, causing his helmet to drop off.
The Italian rider was immediately taken to Clinica Mobile, where he was given cardiac pulmonary resuscitation. The young Italian went into a cardiac arrest due to a severe hit on his head and neck causing multiple injuries, including his rib cage.
Macchiagodena added, “When our medical staff got to him he was unconscious. In the ambulance because there was a cardiac arrest they started CPR (cardiac pulmonary resuscitation). Immediately in the Medical Centre, with the help also of the Doctor of our
staff at the Clinica Mobile and local Doctors, he was incubated and it was possible to take off some blood from the thorax.”
The Medical Director further explained that the injured rider was continually kept on CPR for about 45 minutes. The medical staff carried the practice until he was pronounced as dead.
Unfortunately, Super Sic was not able to recuperate from the multiple injuries and was pronounced dead at 4:56pm according to local time.
